Is Ms. Dill really leaving St. Andrew’s?

No, she’s not. Ms. Dill will be transferring to St. Andrew's Upper School, out on Southwest Parkway. She will be teaching alongside Ms. Luongo, her Latin teacher from when she was a student at St. Andrew’s.

And, although she will miss teaching at the Lower School, Ms. Dill is excited about the new possibilities that the position offers her. Since Ms. Dill’s Latin classes will have an extended amount of time, she will be able to cover more grammar, and vocabulary, and assign projects about mythology, and history, without rushing through her teaching.

Also, at the Upper School, there are a variety of different Latin classes; Latin I, Latin II, and Latin III, so Ms. Dill will have an opportunity to teach students who each have their own unique background with the language.

What are Ms. Dill’s favorite memories about us?

Ms. Dill’s favorite memories include activities outside of the school environment, such as the experience she had traveling with her students to Boston, Washington D.C, and Mo Ranch. She enjoyed watching them learn about their historical surroundings, and the cultural stories of that area.

In fact, Ms. Dill plans on attending the Junior Experience Trip to Italy, this summer. She, and the high schoolers, will be touring the Roman monuments for three weeks.

Inside the classroom, Ms. Dill has had great moments, too. She remembers laughing at the many jokes students tell, and, in general, having a fun time with everyone. Ms. Dill loves seeing how her students benefit from learning the language of Latin, and cherishes teaching at St. Andrew’s.

Have you heard about Ms. Dill’s Latin summer camp?

The camp will start on June 22nd, and end on June 26th. Ms. Dill encourages anyone who is interested in Latin, to attend.

During the camp, the students will have the opportunity to tour the Blanton Museum on UT campus, and to learn more about mythology. Many games and activities are played, such as Certamen, a jeopardy game which test your knowledge on the history of Latin.

It’s a fantastic experience, and will definitely spark your interest in the language.

What Will Mrs. Sexton Do Next?

a Profile by Ava Clark and Lila Josey

According to Mrs. Sexton, “ There is nothing more energizing and fun than to be with 6th grade kids.” And yet, this will be her last year in the classroom.

We decided to find out more about Mrs. Sexton's retirement. We asked her many questions and she answered them very thoughtfully. Mrs. Sexton has taught here for 17 years. Her favorite experiment that she has ever done is the egg in the bottle experiment. Mrs. Sexton has not always taught 6th grade science. She taught 5th grade science for 5 years.

Besides Mo Ranch, her favorite memory from this year was watching us engineer and make a life preserver for happy guy. Mrs. Sexton also loves the pressure unit and all the experiments we do over that unit.

Mrs. Sexton has a very interesting story about how she became interested in science. In 9th grade, she got a bad grade on her report card, and after that, she studied really hard on all of her science tests. She got really good grades after that and she became really interested in biology.  She had this bad experience and then it turned into this amazing experience.  She went on to major in biology in college.

Mrs. Sexton is going to miss every one of the students. However, there will be many opportunities in life for Mrs. Sexton to work with kids again. If she joins choir or dance groups, then some kids might be in those same groups.

Mrs. Sexton is trying to practice her Spanish so when she retires, she will know a whole new language. When she leaves St. Andrew’s, she would want to do a lot of bird watching with her husband. She also wants to volunteer more for her church and she wants to sing more and join a couple choirs. She wants to dance more and do something that involves kids.

Mrs. Sexton is most excited about sleeping later in the coming years. She is also  trying to challenge herself in other ways that she hasn’t had a chance to do. “ Teaching is wonderful, but it is way more than a full time job and a lot of other things should be kept on the back burner,” said Mrs. Sexton

Mrs. Sexton is a great role model and we are sad that she is leaving the St. Andrew’s community. She is an amazing science teacher and we hope that she can achieve her dreams  in the coming years.
