Around Town: Life in ATX

Food Reviews

by Sophie Stokes & Camille Phares

The local restaurants around St. Andrew's are fantastic. Some of the restaurants are Santa Rita, Teo’s, and P-Terry’s. We highly recommend these places because they are kid-friendly, great after sporting events, and easy to get to from our campus. We interviewed people who have been to these restaurants recently, and looked at some reviews online.

P-Terry's is a great place to go! We came here for an after-school snack and it definitely satisfied our growling stomachs. We both ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. The fries were hot when they came out and they tasted really good. The shakes could have tasted better: the chocolate syrup was mostly at the bottom, so the majority of the shake tasted like vanilla. Besides that the meal was very good and, because it is so close to St. Andrews, it made a good afternoon snack!

We also interviewed Ava Clark on what she thought about P-Terry's. She told us that P-Terry's is the best restaurant in the world. She usually gets a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. She also said there is nothing that she has gotten that wasn't good. She also said that she would recommend it to all of her friends because she loves it so much!

Teo's is a very popular gelato and coffee place to go after school or on the weekend. We recently visited it after school and we thought it was very good. We got salted caramel and chocolate gelato, but none of the flavors they had looked bad or tasted bad. The salted caramel gelato was very salty but tasty at the same time. The chocolate gelato had a different taste than regular chocolate ice cream but much better. We would recommend this place to anyone who is craving a tasty treat.

We interviewed our classmate Louise Lee whose dad, Matthew Lee, owns Teo’s. We asked her a couple questions. The first one was “When did Teo’s start?” She responded that it first opened up on July 22nd, 2002.” The second question was ,“What is your favorite gelato at Teo’s and why?” Louise said, “My favorite gelato is strawberry because when you taste it it is super refreshing with the strawberry seeds and just the taste of strawberries.” The last question was, “Why did your family start Teo’s?” Her answer was, “My father traveled around the world and lived in different places. One of them was Italy. He always wondered why gelato was still super delicious as ice-cream but more healthy. So he started Teo by working at Dell then getting money to start Teo because he was so interested in gelato.” We highly recommend this refreshing gelato place after sporting events or even or dessert.

Santa Rita did not fully satisfy our craving for a good Tex Mex dinner. To start, the nachos were just small chips with cheese microwaved, nothing else. The rice and beans didn't taste very good either. They were very plain and didn’t have much taste to them. The quesadillas were pretty good though and we enjoyed the tortillas that they used. Overall it is an okay place to go, but there are better places near St. Andrew's.

As you can tell, there were good and bad things about the places we visited. We loved asking people in the 6th grade what they liked and disliked about P-Terry’s, Teo’s, and Santa Rita because we got a feel for other student's opinions. We hope you, your family, and friends visit these local restaurants after sporting events or just for dinner!

Ding-Dong A True Story by Grayson Albright.

One of the craziest things that ever happened to me happened last night.

At 2 A.M. on Wednesday, the doorbell rang. My mom let my German Shepherd in; he is a guard dog. The alarm went off when she opened the door. She went to the front door and then opened it. There was a guy bleeding from his neck. His hands and neck were duct-taped. I was barely awake.

The man asked to use my mom’s phone. She said, “ No, but I will call the cops for you.”

The cops asked her if she felt okay with it to open the door and ask the man a couple questions.

What had happened to him? Three guys had asked to use his phone and then pushed him into his house. They then and robbed and duct-taped him. Then they dropped him off three blocks away. He stumbled to our to our house because it was lit up the most.

To my family,  his story seemed a little far-fetched for Austin, TX. So my mom called up the detective who was on the case. This was all true. This guy was the victim of this crime.

Austin is getting bigger and that means lots of people. This guy didn’t even live in Tarrytown, he was from South Austin.

I don’t feel as safe as I used to in Austin. Do you?

Sno Beach

by Sarah Courtney

It's a hot sticky day in Austin, and I am waiting in line at Sno Beach for my snow cone. I just finished a long day of school and and a sweaty lacrosse practice. I can’t wait for my “wedding cake with cream”!

What’s wedding cake with cream, you ask? It is the best flavor of snow cone at Sno Beach and Sno Beach is the best place to get Snow Cones. It is my absolute favorite spot to go after anything at school. It is the perfect midday snack and refreshment. If you go with friends, it is even better because you can try even more flavors.

Sno Beach is open most of the year (mainly when it is warm), Monday - Sunday from 12pm, until sundown. There are two locations in Austin. One location is downtown and one is right by St. Andrew’s!

Elizabeth, the current owner of Sno Beach, shared the story of how it started. Sno Beach was started by farmers from Lubbock who wanted to move closer to their children. “D and C”, as they were known, had children who lived in Houston and Dallas, so they decided to live in Austin. The wife had always wanted to start a snow cone stand... and so Sno Beach happened. Elizabeth had always been a fan and dreamed of one day working there. As D and C grew older, they decided it was time to pass it down to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has continued the legacy of a wonderful place to be refreshed in Austin. Her dream has come true.

New Cat Cafe to Open in Austin

by Maddox Kunik and Matt Kennedy

“Have you ever heard of a cat cafe?”

“No? ...Well, me neither.”

Austin will soon have a new cat cafe, funded by Kickstarter. At the new Blue Cat Cafe there will be coffee, food trucks, and fun cats to hang out with! The cafe will begin building after they get enough funds on kickstarter and will open after they finish building.

The Blue Cat Cafe will be a place where cats can stretch and play around with people. This will make the cats kinder and more adoptable. If the cats are happier and more adoptable, people will adopt them, and we will get more cats out of the shelter and into people’s homes. The cats in the cafe, even if they are not adopted, will get to experience lots of friendly people and what it feels like to be cared for nicely. Cats will live in an enclosed place with lots of space and can go in and out with permission.

The Blue Cat Cafe will host cat therapy and Cat Karaoke on “Caturday.” This would be fun and helpful for the cats and humans. Outside the actual cafe, there will be a patio with cats called a “catio”; there, you will be able to get food from food trucks and eat with the cats. The food trucks will be vegan because the Blue Cat Cafe is trying to save animals. The cats however are not going vegan however, because it would be bad for their health.

Timmy O' Brien says that, if the cat cafe opens, “I’ll go.” Can he adopt a cat? He said, “No, I can’t. I have a dog so I can't get a cat.” When asked if a cat cafe is a good idea, Timmy said, “Yeah!”  Timmy also thinks that this will make a very good impact on cat shelters in Austin.

We liked the topic of the Blue Cat Cafe so much that we found a way to convince Mrs. Ortman to donate 100 dollars! We will give a 100-dollar donation as well. The more donations the cat cafe collects, they can afford a location closer into town.  If you want to you donate you can follow this link to donate.

So help a cat out, would you?
