ABOUT THIS DIGITAL NEWSPAPER

An Authentic Writing Experience

This year, in the sixth grade at SAS, students have learned about the writing process, engaging in ongoing cycles of drafting, revision, and publication. Students have worked on many genres, from poems and stories to persuasive writing and even analyzing Shakespeare! This work generally culminates in individual student portfolios, but sixth graders are also hard at work creating a collaborative literary magazine, to be released before the end of the school year.

Earlier this spring, after a Language Arts unit on reading journalism and other non-fiction, student Jackson Matthews came up with the idea to create a newspaper. According to Jackson, "We did a newspaper in fourth grade and it was a lot of fun, so I thought we should do it again.”

The sixth grade newspaper will report on current events and trends in our community, from sports and arts events to editorials on important social issues facing students. It is a work in progress, and we encourage you to return often to see what is new!

The experience of writing for the newspaper has been an overwhelmingly positive experience for students. Camille Phares, who wrote about nearby food establishments with Sophie Stokes, shared that "[the project] gave me a chance to write in a different way.” Cam Evans appreciated the collaborative nature of this assignment. After having a chance to write an editorial with Nina Jourdan and Oneida Haburema, Cam said, “I liked writing in the newspaper because I got to work in a group.”

What else will happen with the newspaper? We hope it will spark conversation and interest. Cam, Oneida, and Nina's editorial on "Sixth Grade Social Classes" is featured on the front page of this website; in Language Arts next week, students have been discussing the issues brought up in this piece.

We hope that you enjoy reading and learning more about all of the different perspectives of sixth graders at SAS!
